CHS at Harvard Model Congress

In the words of former CHS Model Congress president Will Rojas ’19, “I don’t even know how to respond.”

CHS brought home a stunning ten awards this weekend at Harvard Model Congress: two Best Delegate Awards, two Honorable Mentions, and Best District Court Team (all six team members were awarded).

Fifteen students returned from Harvard Model Congress after five days away from home and steeped in political, historical, and legal debate and discourse. HMC is a challenging conference that attracts nearly 1500 students from around the country and world to attend. This year, our students chose to participate in several particularly challenging committees and special programs.

They did very, very well. In a record-breaking performance, ten out of the fifteen students --  two-thirds of our entire delegation -- won awards.
  • Mason won Best Delegate in her role as Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley (D) in Senate Judiciary.
  • Tony won Best Delegate in his role as Senegal in the United Nations Security Council.
  • William won an Honorable Mention in his role as Argentina in the United Nations Security Council.
  • Adam won an Honorable Mention in his role as Texas Congressman Mac Thornberry (R) in House Armed Services.
  • Lastly, District Court Team 9 -- consisting of Michael, Laura, Lauren, Dylan, Sabina, and Raines -- beat out nine other teams to bring home the coveted Best Delegation Award. This was CHS' first-ever performance in District Court.
I am so proud of our students -- as is the case with every conference, regardless of awards and results. But this one truly felt special, due to...
  • The challenging roles our students took on
  • The sleepless nights endured during the conference preparing for session
  • The many, many literal tears shed throughout the weekend;
  • The many, many prayers lifted up before every committee session and every District Court hearing;
  • All the ways our kids showed what it meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ to the 1500 other students with whom they shared this weekend.

The best part of this weekend was getting to sit together on Saturday night and hear the kids share about all the ways God has worked in their lives through MC. This was a really special weekend. As my time as advisor to CHS Model Congress comes to a close, I could not be more grateful to have had a community that comes together to support these students. Beautiful, divine things are happening in and around all of our students, all in different ways. It's so cool to see.

Over 650 photos were taken at this weekend’s conference. You can find those photos and much more — including story highlights, full length video of speeches, student reflections, and other behind the scenes moments — at the CHS Model Congress Instagram page (@chs.modelcongress).

For those interested, I recorded an hour-long podcast episode reflecting on the events this weekend in gratuitous detail. It can be found here.

Congratulations to all of our students! To Him be the glory.
