CHS Swim Team Recording-setting Season
Record-Setting Season for CHS Swimmers
The third year of the CHS swim team saw us completing in the New England Division III Swimming championships March 7 in West Hartford. It was a long day for the swimmers, departing school at 6:00 am and returning at 10:45 p.m.! But it was time well spent: we set ten school records and the kids swam very well, ending the year in style.
Seven swimmers qualified for the championships and after morning qualifying swims, all seven athletes qualified for evening finals. Four swimmers qualified for an “A” final, meaning they were in the top 8 in that event. Alec made two “A” finals and placed sixth in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Mateo placed eighth in the 100 butterfly and Peter placed eighth in the 500 freestyle.
Overall school records were set in ten events. Alec and Mateo set school records in both their events, as did graduating senior Emily, who set school records in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Peter broke the 500 free record and Laura broke her own 500 free record by almost 30 seconds! The boys swam two relays that also broke school records and placed fourth and sixth. The fourth place is our highest ever placing at a New England championship outside of Emily LaRocque’s (’19) back-to-back diving championships in 2018 and 2019. We missed a medal by 1.4 seconds in the fourth place relay. Bobby and Josh both swam well on the relays and set personal bests in their swims.
It was a successful season: the students put in many hours in the pool and their hard work paid off.
