CHS senior William Liang awarded 2020 National Merit Scholarship

CHS senior and class valedictorian Anda “William” Liang has been named a 2020 National Merit Scholar.  The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

William was selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, using a variety of information such as his academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; standardized test scores; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay; and a recommendation letter.

William reflects on the ways his journey at CHS has shaped him.  “Joining CHS as a seventh grader, I was quite nervous. I can still remember students being surprised that I had never heard of the Bible. Yet this community accepted me with joy and embraced my differences.  It was that support and care that gave me a sense of belonging at a place thousands of miles away from home.  I will be forever grateful.  Moreover, my character has been gradually shaped over the past six years.  From a muddled middle-school boy, CHS has built me into a confident and compassionate young adult.”

This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2018 when over 1.5 million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state-representational basis. Only these 16,000 Semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition.  From the Semifinalist group, some 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  By the conclusion of the 2020 program, about 7,600 Finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of over $30 million in college scholarships.

William’s teachers and friends are incredibly proud of his accomplishments and look forward to seeing what is next for him.  One thing’s for sure, says William: “As I continue my journey, I will surely bring along the love that CHS has shown me and pass it on to others.”

Congratulations William! I am so proud of you and all your accomplishments! Thank you for giving me the privilege of getting to know you personally as one of your “CHS Moms”, and the memories that we shared together with your “Big Brother, Peter”, Mingran. Thank you for the many years you help me set up for our annual CHS Veterans Assembly. You will be in my prayers as you enter into the next chapter of your life that God has planned for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) Always remember that our Lord Jesus loves you, He is with you & He will lead you into the pathway of Life. God bless you, William Liang, Love in Christ, Mrs. Bonnie Boccarossa
