Classes taught now and in the past:
I currently teach one section of Freshman Literature and Composition and serve as the director of marketing here at CHS. In the past, I have taught Literature Survey, American Literature, British Literature, World Literature, Advanced Composition, AP Literature, Human Rights and Literature, and Drama.
What do you love most about CHS?
I love the balance of warmth and community with an earnest quest for excellence. Sometimes it’s tempting to think that the priorities of building community are at odds with the priorities of accomplishing awesome things – but at CHS, faculty, staff, administration, and students show that those impulses can complement each other. I love to see students leading with heart.
What one word would you use to describe CHS?
Dedicated. I see my students and colleagues working extremely hard for a common purpose. The idea of Christian schooling is taken very seriously here – there’s a shared belief that a Christian education can, and should be, a better education than any other alternative.
How are faith and learning integrated at CHS?
It seems to happen pretty naturally here. When I engage my students in a discussion about the faith dimension of a particular topic, they dive in with such facility that I can tell they are accustomed to that level of dialogue.
What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?
I have studied and worked in various countries including England, Italy, and China, and that international perspective definitely informs my teaching. My time as founding director of a performing arts center in central Massachusetts has also shaped my thinking about how students’ understanding and skill can be strengthened through authentic application of their learning and meaningful connections with the larger community.
How would you describe CHS students?
They are warm and welcoming, earnest and responsible, and enjoyable to be around.
Anything else to add?
The students, teachers, and staff at CHS have been encouraging and inspirational to me in many ways – they make me want to do my best work.
